HTML Work

Start today with a Google A Day.

Then Draw a Stickman.  Wouldn't you like to learn how to do that?

You will create a one page website about your current class schedule. This website should include:
  • A title in the header code.
  • A clear heading on the page.
  • A list of classes (yes, there is a code for list)
  • A brief paragraph describing yourself (junior at Seymour High School, etc...)
  • Background color other than white.  Keep the color light (no bright red, black, etc...if you disagree go back and look at the bad websites)
If you do the above correctly the maximum you can score is 3/4.  You must do at least one of the extras to be able to score 4/4.
Extras:
1. Can you include an image that you created?  Remember that the image must be in the same folder as the webpage.
2. Can you place the schedule in a table?

Be sure you code the first 8 code tags correctly.  Be sure you open and close your tags in the correct order.
Save the file to your WDrive-HTML folder when done.

Growing your Blog Audience

Each of you should have a blog post measuring the reach of your blog and the red clustrmap dots.  We did this on Monday. Some of you began your campaign to grow your audience by commenting on blogs.  We will continue this today.

We have discussed the difference between spam comments and valuable comments.  Remember that a valuable comment builds on the conversation.  Your goal for this assignment is to create comments that make people interested to read more about your thoughts.

Building an audience is one of the most important skills we will work on.  Nearly every product, service, and idea is sold via the web now.  You MUST know how to get your work out there to survive and eat.  This blog is practice for that.

I'm also hoping to raise the level of work on your google profile.  For many of you your twitter feed is your #1 result on google.  For many of you this is NOT good.  Seriously.  And remember, swearing is bad.

Today you will do three things:
1. Write blog posts to increase the quality of your blog (see topics below).  You need posts that people will link to, email their friends, post on twitter.  We want people to be saying "Read this!".
2. Comment, comment, comment.  Using google you will find blogs to comment on.  You will leave comments everywhere.  You will make the comments interesting and they will extend the conversation. Be sure to leave your blog address in the comment info!!!
3. If you find an interesting blog post you will write about and link back to the original blog.  This is "polite blogging".  This is how traffic gets generated.  "I read this great blog article about...".

Suggested blog posts (remember to include links, a cool title, embed video/images if needed).  Choose one or all:
1. If you are a football fan: Explain when you would punt the ball and when you "go for it" so anyone can understand it.
2. If you are a cheerleader: Is cheerleading becoming more dangerous?  Describe how cheerleading has changed over time.  Where is the line between OK and too dangerous?
3. If you are a musician:  How have headphones and iPods changed music?
4. If you are an artist/photographer: How has the internet changed how we view art?  Does the internet help or hurt art?
5. If you eat: What should we eat?  Should we be allowed to eat whatever we want?  What if we know what we eat is slowly killing us?
6. If you breath: Whats in the air that you breath?  Is it safe to breath?

Blogging: Wednesday Work

Choose three of the following to write a blog post.

1. Can you spot the liar?

2. What is your favorite infographic on this list?  Infographics are changing how we tell our stories.

3. Should the child have been at sea?  Take a position and defend it.

4. If you look up what you want to order for dinner will you be hacked?  How can you protect your system?

5. What is the top news story of the hour?  Right NOW.

6. Should students be allowed to wear Google Glasses?

7. Imagine you were studying the Civil War and found out that for entertainment kids of that time period spent hours a day playing games where they simulated killing people.  Now think about games that you play on the computer.  Will future society look kindly at us for spending hundreds of billions of dollars and games that simulate shooting people?

Each blog post must:

  • Be long enough to explain the topic.
  • Include your opinion and evidence.
  • Include a link.
  • One of the posts must include an embedded video.
________________________________________________________________________

Additional:

1. Everyone prints out your summary screen from Code Avengers.   Must have 400pts.
2. Complete a Google a Day.  Add to spreadsheet.

Challenges

Challenge #1:  Create a one page resume and put in your google folder and print for teacher.  This is a TRADITIONAL resume.  Here are some tips.  Here is an example.  I will spend a lot of time on this assignment.  We will make infographic resumes shortly.

Some things to think about:
  • Use google doc to make notes and brainstorm about the resume.
  • List EVERYTHING you could possibly include.  Only include stuff you did in middle school if it is truly amazing (like winning a National Science Fair or something).
  • Follow the format, follow the format, follow the format.
  • Use active verbs.  Quantify everything:
    • Created and published movie review podcast that reached 75 listeners per day
    • Directed Hope Club recruitment plan that increased membership by 75%
    • Implemented lunch recycling plan that resulted in 35% reduction in cafeteria waste
Challenge #2:  Create an account in Meograph.  Create a meograph around one of the following:
  • Your family vacations.
  • Your favorite professional teams best season (Road to Victory...)
  • Battles of the Revolutionary War
  • Upcoming tour of your favorite singer/band
Challenge #3:  Using the app Hopscotch on the iPad code the app so:
  • Level 1: The monkey will travel in the correct direction when you tilt the ipad (up-down-left-right).
  • Level 2: The monkey will follow a maze that you design.
  • Level 3: The monkey needs to follow the maze you design or it will grow so big it explodes...
Challenge #4: Class work.
  • Complete the Google A Day.  You should have at least ten scores in your google a day spreadsheet.
  • All students should have scored at least 400pts on Code Avengers

Blog Writing

1. Update your blog with any missing assignments.  Post any entries to Google+.

2. Analyze the red dots on your clustrmap on your blog.

  • Please write a short blog entry about your audience.

3. Play with Google Story Builder.

  • Figure out how to construct a story and use the tool.
  • Embed your story on your blog.
4. Evaluate the Build with Chrome website.  Obviously you need to be on Chrome for your browser.
  • Is this just a game, or does virtual reality act as a teaching tool?
  • Notice you can search for an address.  Can you build your house, or Seymour HS, or Yankee Stadium?  Thats just an example.
  • Post a blog entry, be sure to include link.
Please remember, I give you these examples so you can practice writing online.  Please continue to improve your blog entries.

Does your blog post:
  • Include links for anything that should be linked?
  • Writing that is clear, free of errors, and inviting to the reader?
  • Include videos and images where appropriate?
Everyone should have three blog entries posted today.

A/B Day Madness

We have 30 minutes.  Lets watch some videos.  Put on your headphones.

I love this Arnold video. His movies were really big when I was in high school so that voice is iconic. He really, really believes what he is saying.  That last line is classic.

If you watch this TED talk watch it from the beginning and do not skim forward! Its freaky amazing.

I've watched this 100 times. Still funny.

Funny Ellen moments.

Additional work:

  • Do some wikipedia edits.  Check out the SHS page.  Perhaps there is too much information there does not quite fit wikipedia's guidelines.  We can also organize it better.
  • Google a Day.  Keep practicing.
  • Read this story about caffeine drinks.  Also, I'm pretty sure any type of soda or fruit drink may shorten your life.
  • This review in the NYTimes of Guy Fierri's new restaurant .  It is very, very harsh.
  • If you did all that check out some of my favorite videos.  Be sure to have headphones on.

Please work on your coding today.

1. Work in code avengers.

2. Check out Code.org.

Computer Lab Redesign Test

Imagine you cleared this room out.  No chairs, no computers, no nothing.

Imagine I gave you $40,000 to outfit a new computer lab.  What would you design?  I want you to prepare a proposal.
Your lab might look like a Starbucks with a juice machine, couches and a few tables.  It might have a bunch of round tables for people to collaborate.  Your lab might have PCs, iMacs, Laptops, or iPads.  Will it have a TV or a Smartboard?  Should there be a rug?  Posters?  Ergonomic furniture?
What are some of my parameters for the computer lab?
  • There should be seating for 25.  This does not necessarily mean 25 computers.
  • You must budget for everything.  This includes chairs, wifi hubs, printers, etc... You must budget for software.
  • This is a "general purpose" lab for a high school.
What must you prepare?
  • A spreadsheet outlining how you will spend the money.  Including formulas and charts.
  • One page memo.  Memo must start with the words "I recommend that...."  Follow the format for the memo!!
  • A slideshow presentation to the class.
  • Drawings or video of proposed lab.
  • You must turn in a paper copy of your proposal as well as post all work on your blog and Google+.
What will I look for?
  • That you contribute to discussions and documents.
  • Thoughtful design and research.  Will the lab be effective? You should show evidence of research ("I emailed Microsoft", "I surveyed the English department")
  • Accuracy and proper use of tools (google docs, spreadsheet formulas, etc...).
  • Presentation is consistently designed.  For example, your fonts on the spreadsheet match the fonts on your memo.
This will be due at end of class on Friday.
I will nitpick this project like crazy.  Be ready.  This is the first assignment I will really check for accuracy.

Challenge #1:
Complete a Google a Day.  Make sure you enter data correctly to your spreadsheet.  Have you figured out how to compute average time?

Challenge #2:
How responsible do adults and teens need to be about technology use with children?  Watch this video.  Is technology use helpful or harmful?  What rules should be set up in a household?  Please write a blog entry that:

  • Includes links to relevant research, videos, or images.
  • Is clearly written, has a main point, topic sentences, etc...
  • Encourages conversation and comments.
  • Is shared in the Google+ community.
Challenge #3:
Analyze the red dots on your clustrmap on your blog.  Please write a short blog entry about your audience.  You can also go to blogger and look at your stats to see which blog posts got read, and by whom.

Challenges

All students must get a check from me that their SchneiderCorp spreadsheet is done.

Please ensure that a CORRECT version of the spreadsheet and presentation is on Google+.

Challenge #5:
Can you attach a chart to the Challenge SchneiderCorp spreadsheet that shows me how much farm equipment stuff we sold? Please attach chart to separate sheet.

Challenge #6:
Clean up your google a day spreadsheet.  What is the average time it took you to solve the puzzle?  Yes there is a formula for time.  Thats todays puzzle, I suppose.  Can you find and apply this formula to get an average?  I don't have an answer yet, but I'm sure its really simple.

Challenge #7 (extra-when done):
Design a task with the Makey-Makey or review an App on the iPad.  Blog about the activity and post to Google+.

Challenges

Challenge #1:

Complete Google a Day.  Put results in spreadsheet.

Challenge #2:

Some of you have experience with spreadsheets, some of you don't.  This next challenge will be a good way to get us started.  Create a new spreadsheet in your google Web Apps folder and name it "Challenge 2: Spreadsheet".

Design a spreadsheet that includes the following information:
  • Monthly sales figures need to be collected.
  • Mr. Jones, Ms. Smith, Mr. Williams, and Miss Stanley are the sales people who work for "Schneider Corp".
  • Schneider Corp sells farm equipment.  Tractors cost $10000, Mowers cost $5000, and Plows cost $15,000.
  • Mr. Jones sold 3 tractors, 2 mowers, and zero plows this month.
  • Ms. Smith sold 1 tractor, 1 mower, 1 plow.
  • Mr. Williams sold 5 plows.
  • Miss Stanley sold 2 tractors, 2 mowers, 1 plow.
The spreadsheet should show me total $$ each sales person sold, total # of each item sold, total $ of each item sold.  Finally what was our total $$ sales for the month?
I will walk around and help you.  Also use google and the help menu to figure out your formulas.  It may help some of you to draw it out on paper first.

Challenge #3:
Create a Google Presentation of your class schedule.  A few rules:

1. You can only have 10 slides.  Not 9, not 11, but 10.
2. You must spend some time reading about Presentation Zen.  Really check out some of the tips.  I will not accept poorly designed slides.  If you took my freshman seminar class you are very familiar with these rules.
3. You can only use YOUR photos or drawings OR photos you find using a CC search.  Plagiarism applies to photos as well as text.  If you search within Google Docs (click insert image) those images will be CC images.

Name the presentation "Schedule" and save in your folder.

Challenge #4:
If blogger is back up, please ensure you have completed your tests and posted to Google+

Donate some rice to support world hunger.

Hopefully...

Hopefully both wikipedia and Google are rolling and I can do some grading.

Please watch this video.  Some cool new things for Google Docs:

)

Today:

1. Do the google a day.  Put your results in your spreadsheet.

2. Check out this cool hack from MusicHackDay.  Put in your headphones.  Read more about music hack day here.  I kinda wish school was like this.

3. Read and Write Blog post:  read this article about testing.  What do you think?  Include link to original article.

4. Complete Wikipedia tutorial from last class.  Be familiar with the pillars of wikipedia and how to make basic edits.

5. Get to at least 300pts total in code avenger.

A few things we need to improve as a class in our writing:
  • Paragraphs.  Organize your thoughts.
  • Include relevant links.
  • Have a solid closing thought.  The closing thought should encourage comments on your blog.  Don't END a conversation, START one.

Wikipedia--Round #2

OK, the issue with wikipedia accounts seems to be working now.  You all should have made an account.

Step 1: Log in.

Step 2: Complete the Training for Students.

Step 3: Edit the Seymour High School Page.  Notice an edit made yesterday by a student in our class was rejected.  Learn the procedure.

Step 4: Edit pages that you find interesting.   Or search for the many pages where Wikipedia editors ask for help in editing.

Why learn wikipedia:

  • You should understand how this encyclopedia is edited.
  • It is a good application of a code.
  • It is a way for me to assess if you can read directions and apply concepts in a real world example.
I will assess by going to your wikipedia page.  It shows the edits you made.
_______________________________________________________________________

In addition:
1. Complete and log a Google A Day.
2. Check your blog for comments and clustrmap red dots.
3. Check Google+

Wikipedia

We will be spending some time in wikipedia.  I want you to read, edit, and comment on articles.  Wikipedia is a very, very powerful tool for communication.

Step 1: Create an account in wikipedia.  This should work today.  If it is IP address blocking you try this procedure.

Step 2: Complete the tutorial.  Wikipedia's editing rules are serious.

Step 3: Begin editing the Seymour High School page.  Follow the wikipedia rules to decide:
  • What is relevant?
  • What can you provide sources for?
  • How should you format the entries and edits?
You WILL get almost immediate feedback from other editors on the site.  Be polite, be thoughtful, and above all be correct!
Step 4: Edit additional articles that may interest you.  Anything that is school appropriate.  I expect this to be an ongoing process.  Edit something you are an expert in.
How will I evaluate you?  Good question.
  • Quality:
    • Do your edits follow the format for wikipedia?
    • Do the edits get rejected by other editors?
    • Do you add value to Wikipedia?
    • Did you finish the tutorial and show evidence of that work in your editing?
  • Quantity:
    • You should have between 10-15 substantive edits (not fixing typos, etc...) before March 31.  This will be hard for some of you.
    • I should see some edits over a period of time (not all on one day).  This is to show that you are checking your work and responding to other editors.
    • Edits survive on at least two pages.
  • Collaboration:
    • Do you help classmates as you complete the tutorial?
    • Do you utilize the chat functions to communicate with other editors?
    • Do your edits respect other viewpoints?
______________________________________________________________________________
In addition:
1. Everyone does Google A Day.
2. If you are missing blog entries (Educational Games, Is it Alive, etc..) do that now.
3. Everyone must have at least four comments on blogs or Google+.  Make sure the comments add value to the conversation.
4. Code Avenger.  Try to finish courses.  This will be homework after today.
5. Do some learning with MakeyMakey.

Educational Games

TED and Games

Watch Theo Jansen: Freaky. Mind-blowing. But pay attention. What is life? Can you make something that lives out of PVC pipe? He does. Cyborg alert!  Wear your headphones.

When done check out the educational games and simulations. Can you find any other quality games?
Questions please answer on your blog (two posts):
1. Are the the Jansen creatures alive?  Why or why not?  This is a really hard question to answer--what is life?
2. Review each game in a 3-4 sentence paragraph.  What is the game, what is trying to teach you, and did it work?  Do games help learning?

    Challenges

**Be sure to complete the Google a Day and put the answer in your spreadsheet that you made on Friday.

    Challenge #5:
Draw a map of Seymour High School using Google Docs.  Name this "Challenge #5-Map".  I do not need EVERY detail on the map, just the highlights (cafeteria, library, etc...).  How will you deal with the 2 floors?  Please print out your map for me AND save it in your google folder.

    Challenge #6:
Write me a formal email asking me to read and subscribe to your blog.  Write it to bschneider@seymourschools.org.  This email should be short, include a link, and have absolutely no typos.

    Challenge #7:
Please write a blog post about your survey results.  You might include data from your survey.  Google uses some neat charts and pie graphs.  Can you find them?  What will you improve next time?  One of the most important aspects of any campaign (business, political, or social) is getting responses.  Did you get five responses?  If not, work on it before you write the post.

    Challenge #8:
Work for 30 minutes in either HTML or Java in Code Avengers.

    Challenge #9:
Did you comment on Mr. Florek's blog post yet?  Leave comments that continue the conversation or add value.  Your comment should show evidence that you read the blog post AND your blog post.

    Tuesday, February 25, 2014

    Challenges

    Challenge #1:

Play with the Makey Makey.  Report what you do/make on your blog.

    Challenge #2:

Get 200 total points on Code Avenger.

    Challenge #3:

    1. Create a folder in google drive.  Name it "Web Apps". Create a new google form in your folder.  Name it "Challenge #3".  Some help if you need it is here.

    2. Write questions that will elicit feedback about your blog so you can improve it.  You should decide:
    • What demographic information to collect (age, gender, etc...).
    • How many questions should you ask?  Too few questions and you don't get good feedback, too many questions and people get annoyed.
    • What format for the questions gives you the best feedback (paragraphs, check boxes, dropdown menu)?
    • What do you want to know?  What do people want to hear about?
    3. Post a link to the "live form" on your blog.  Get responses from at least 5 people.

    Challenge #4:

    1. Write a formal business letter to Mr. Lungarini requesting he read your blog.  This letter should:
    • Demonstrate proper formatting.
    • Include no typos.
    • Be convincing. Mr. Lungarini is a busy guy and values his time.
    • Let him know how to find the blog.
    2. Include a signature.  If you save your drawing you can use it again.  Hint: scribble.
    3. Be sure the document is in your shared folder.  Name it "Challenge #4".  Print out letter and hand to Mr. Schneider.

    Challenge #4:

    1. Create a google spreadsheet where you track the answer to the Google A Day.  Name it "Google Puzzle".

    2.  Include columns for Date, Topic, Answer, Time taken.

    3. Do the puzzle, record results.  Save in folder.
