Final Exam

Below is the final exam for Spring 2014 Web Applications.  The exam must be completed in class before the end of the assigned period.  All work must be your own.  However, you are free to search the internet or look at any previous work.

Blog Post (50pts):
What is the effect of violent video games on behavior?  Create a blog post that answers this question.  Your blog post should include all elements of modern web writing.  You must post your response to the Google+ community.

HTML (50pts):
You will create a two-page website.

• Create a folder.  Name it (firstinital, lastname, project----bschneiderfinal)
• All work will be in this folder.
• I choose a topic many of you nothing about.....flowers.
• Your home page will be a picture of a flower.  
• Name this file home.html
• Heading = FLOWERS
• Background color = YELLOW
• Place an image in the center of the page.  
• Below the image write "For more information click here".  Click here will link to page2
• Your second page will include information.
• Name this file page2.html
• Link back to home page
• Heading = Flower Images
• Background color = YELLOW
• Create a table with a border.  4 rows, 2 columns.

Save folder to UDrive-WebApps folder when done.

Your exam is done when you post your blog to Google+ and save your website to your folder on the UDrive.  Please remain quiet until the bell rings or until all students are done with their exam.

Monday

Last chance to submit missing work.  If you have missing work that you turn in be sure that you tell me so I mark it in the gradebook.  Grades will close when the bell rings.

Your exam will include:

• Writing of a blog post that includes links, images, and video.
• Coding of an HTML website that has at least two pages.
• Saving of HTML website in appropriate spot on UDrive.
• Completing all work in allotted time.  The exam is designed to take 60-75 minutes.  Those of you who require extra time have the entire 2 hour block.  If you finish early you must stay in room.  

Thursday Work

1. Read the NYTimes article "Do our kids get off to easy?"  Write a blog article.  Do you agree with the author?  Post to Google+ community.

2. Complete a Google A Day.

3. How many red dots do you have?  Remember, if you get a red dot from ten different countries you do not have to take the final exam.

4. Complete the Intro in Scratch.  If you did this before it will take you 2 minutes.  Show teacher when done.

5. Make five substantive comments on classmates blogs.

6. Watch this short film from a few years back.  Youtube has exploded the popularity of short films.

Exam

Your final exam will occur next Thursday in this room (104).

Your exam will require you to code and create a working website.  You will have to save the website to the UDrive.  We will practice this today.

Today:

1. Create a folder on your desktop.

• Name it using the following protocol; first name, last name, project (brandtschneiderfinal).
• Save your BEST webpage to this folder.  Copy any needed images into folder.
• Copy folder to UDrive-WebApps.

2.  Complete 700pts in Code Avengers.

3. Complete any missing work.

4. Using Hopscotch code a task that is "Etch-a-Sketch".  Have you seen the task that draws the shells of the Sydney Opera House?  Can you recreate that?  Or maybe try the Eiffel Tower, or Seymour High School, or Yankee Stadium?  Make it fun.  Share with teacher when done.

TED Video

I would like you to watch at least three videos today from start to finish. Everyone must watch the Bobby McFerrin video. I give you some prompts to start a discussion on your blog. Some of these videos are about 10-20 minutes long. All are from a few years ago.

Please write a substantial blog post that reviews the videos.  Be sure to embed or link to videos and any additional information.

Hans Rosling: How data is cool. Think of your little Excel charts. Will you be ready to use data like this? This guy is fun to listen to.

Jeff Han: How displays will change. This would profoundly change how we use computers.  This is from six years ago.  How fast technology evolves (Hello iPod!).

John Maeda: A smart, funny guy talks about simplicity. Think about how simplicity is the driving force in design (hint: iPads).

Rives: This guy can talk.  Power of the spoken word.  I laughed out loud (also notice his use of powerpoint).  Check this poem about the internet by Rives.  Fascinating (and why you should work on your poetry).

Bobby McFerrin: How does that work without rehearsal?  Is music hard-wired to our brains?  Bobby's genius is awe inspiring.

John Bohannon: Why you should dance and not use powerpoint.  This is super-awesome. Can dance make you understand science?  Do that google search he speaks about. Any dancers here?  That would be an AWESOME project.

David Blaine: Not for the faint of heart.  Is he crazy, or focussed?

William Kamkwamba: Inspiring.  Many of you are 14.  What is on your resume?  Think about all that you have to work with here.

Wednesday Work

1. Complete the following HTML code:

• First 8 tags
• Title = Your Name
• Heading = Thanksgiving
• Create a simple website that explains Thanksgiving to a non-American who is visiting this country.
• The background color must not be white.  
• The webpage must include links to information.
• The webpage must include an image.

Test your website.  Print out code and hand to teacher.  Be sure your name is in the Title.

2. Print out your code avengers page.  700 points.  Make sure your name is on paper.  Hand to teacher.

Return home

1. Over the weekend we heard the news that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl was released as prisoner of war by the Taliban.  He went missing in June of 2009.  After five years the world has changed a lot.  If you were briefing the Sgt. about technology changes what five things would you focus on?  Please write a blog post that highlights the technology shifts of the last five years since June 2009.  Your blog post should include images and links and have distinct paragraphs, including a clear introduction.

This should take you awhile.  Test grade.  I am looking for an expertly crafted article.

2. Continue codeavengers work.  700 pointts is new goal.

3. Play with Scratch.

1. Today students will explore Scratch, the programming language from the people at M.I.T. This program is designed to teach some basic programming functions. With this program you can do some basic behavior and game functions and produce some cool things. It looks a lot like the Hopscotch game we have been playing.

2. Please ensure you are caught up on your blogs and coding (600pts).

3. What do you think about Google's Car?  Please write a descriptive blog post about the new car.  Be sure to include an image or video.

Tuesday Work

Today:
1. HTML review.  We will do this together.  This will be turned in today for a grade.
2.  Play around with MyHeritage.com, ancestry.com  and FamilySearch.org . I give you the option to create an account and explore this software.  There is a free account option that asks for your email address.  This is an optional assignment.  I've done this with previous classes and they have loved using it.

• Rate the usability of one of the geneology sites.

3. Check your comments and red dots on your blog.  Any progress?

• What if you got 1 point for each red dot and needed to get to 100pts to pass.  How would your blog strategy change? 

4. Create an online resume using Vizualize.Me, Google Sites, Re.Vu or Weebly.  Which site works best for your needs? Check out some of these resumes:

• Should you have a traditional resume and an infographic website?  

5. Coding is getting a lot of press lately.  You have spent a good part of this class learning some basic coding.  We know most of the innovation that is happening the world requires coding knowledge.  

• Should coding be a required course?  Should it be a math credit or science credit?

Answer one of the above blog reflective questions based on what you do today.

Red Dots

Today:

1. If you get red dots from ten different countries you will not have to take your final exam.  How can you improve the reach of your blog?

2. Utilize an online/free animator like PowToon to add a video to any of your websites.  If PowToon doesn't work search for another option.

3. Play with Code.org.  This is a bit easy, but it will help with coding logic.  Can you solve all the problems?

4. Take the typing test .

• Put your score in your blog (be honest!) and see if it improves later.
• Don't say "I took a typing test". Say "I took a typing test". Demonstrate that you know how to code a link.
• Compare to scores from previous tests.

5. Can you create a musical instrument using the Makey Makey?

6. Can you code Hopscotch on the iPad so the character draws a circle?  A stick figure?

In addition:

1. Ensure all tests are completed.

2. 600pts in Code Avengers.

Tuesday Work

Hacking basically means to create something new.  Often it takes a negative connotation--"He hacked into the computer files"--but it in schools we are seeing more and more students hack solutions.  The Makey Makey is a product of hacking.

I enjoy following Music Hack Day.

Today we will practice our HTML skills while we look at Johnny Lee.

Johnny Lee wowed the TED crowd when he showed how he can use a Wii Remote to make a cheap interactive Whiteboard. Please create a website that does the following:

• Embed the TED video (How do you embed a video?) 
• Create a table that lists the parts needed and their approximate cost. (Can we format the table so TH and TD are used effectively?  Should there be a border?)
• Links to more information. Use google to search effectively. (How will you display this information? A list?  A paragraph?)
• A basic description of how it is done.  (Be sure your website explains the process.  Can you write an effective description?)

Friday Activities

1. I will distribute grade sheets.

2. Students who are done with all work will do the following.  I am encouraging you to use Google to search for ideas.  If you figure something out use your blog to document so other people can use YOU as a resource.  First bullet point is easiest, progressing to harder:

• Use the Hopscotch App on iPad to:
• Can you have character draw a square?
• Can you have character draw a loop/circle?
• How about your signature?  Or a stick figure person?  These are a series of loops and lines.  Can you program it?
• Use the Makey Makey to:
• Operate like a mouse
• Play a game on your computer
• Create a musical instrument/keyboard 

Wednesday Work

Both tests should be completed at this point.

Today you should practice making effective blog posts by reading and writing about the two articles.  Please format the blog posts using modern tools and design.

In addition I would like you to work on your coding.

Today:

1. You must do todays Google A Day and record your answer.

2. Please complete 600 pts on Code Avengers.

3. Please read the debate on the NYTimes about coding.  Each entry is only a few paragraphs.  Please write a blog post that answers the following:

--Should coding be taught in schools?  
--At what age?

Provide evidence and links from the article.  Be sure to post to the Google+ class community.

4. Can you answer the question "Should a Robot Sacrifice Your Life to Save Two?".  Please debate this in a blog post and post to Google+.  You must comment on at least five classmates blogs with comments that extend the conversation.

Tests

There are two test grades out there right now:

1. Snow Fall.  Some of you completed this, but I asked you to resubmit it.  Please make any needed corrections.  I am testing your reading of content and your ability to create a modern blog post.

2. Favorites.  Some of you clearly needed more time on this.  Some of you, however, did not work on it at all.  Please be sure to complete today.

Both assignments must be submitted, and correct, by the end of class.

In addition:

1. You must do todays Google A Day and record your answer.

2. Please complete 600 pts on Code Avengers.

HTML Tables

Spend some time reading and practicing creating tables in HTML.  Its not that hard, but it requires a precise order of codes.  Pay attention.

Know the difference between TD, TR, TH.

Next:


Create an HTML website that will demonstrate some HTML skills.

1. This assignment is called "Favorites". Create a folder in your HTML folder.

2. Create a four page HTML website. Save the four pages as home, foods, music, school. (Do you know how to create pages in notepad and save them in a folder?  Be sure to create them with the first 8 tags that are in every HTML page)

3. On the home page include an MSPaint image of you that you create and include links to the other pages. This is your landing page. (Can you save the picture in the right spot so it can be embedded in your webpage?)

4. Foods (Can you find a CC image and search for effective information?):

• List your three favorite foods using an An ordered list.
• Include an image from a creative commons search on flickr. Notice the difference when you click "interesting" vs. "relevant"
• Include a link to a recipe of your favorite food.

5. Music (Can you make this page visually interesting and consistent with the other three pages?):

• Include an image of a treble clef from a creative commons search on flickr.
• Include links to three artists you find interesting.
• Include bold typing somewhere.

6. Schedule (Can you code a table?  Can you code it so the display makes sense?):

• Include your schedule using a table.
• Use an underline code somewhere.
• Make the table border blue.

7. Layout/Other (Does your site look modern and effective?)

• Be sure to link all pages together.
• Include links where there should be links.
• All pages should look uniform and connected.
• White background color.

Snow Fall

Today we will read the Snow Fall.  Everyone is talking about this piece in the NY Times.  It won a Pulitzer Prize which is a top award for newspapers.  It is an amazing blend of video, text, graphics, and audio.  You should read it with your headphones on.

That's right, a newspaper piece you read with your headphones on.

This is a "long read".  Take the time.  It is worth it.  I realize that some of you are slower readers and this might end up being homework. 

Your test grade is a blog entry.  We have not had a test yet this marking period.  Your question: "How will writing change in the digital age?".  Be sure to reference this Snow Fall text.

We have talked a lot about this and there are other sources that you could cite.

Please think about your answer.  Plan it out.  Include links.  Use paragraphs.

Friday Work

Before we start:

You will complete the typing test. We did this before.

More HTML Coding

We will make our first webSITE today. Until now we have made webPAGES. Today please do the following:

• Create a folder in your WDrive-HTML. Label it correctly "Flag".
• Download a clip-art or Creative Commons image of an American Flag (do not steal one from Google images). Save in flag folder
• Create a two-page website.
• Title Page 1: "American Flag". Add heading, background color, and flag image.
• Center image.  Include Alt text in image code.
• Title Page 2: "American Flag History". Add heading. Add short description of Flag history with two links to further information.
• Link pages together: Make image on Page 1 the link to Page 2. On Page 2 include a "home" link back to page 1.
• Does your font choice matter?  Read this.
• Save both pages. Test links.
• Show teacher when done.  Be sure the links work.

When done:

• Put in your headphones and play with Bobby or Incredibox
• Watch this these awesome grandparents send their grand son a birthday video.  Yes, that is tap water catching on fire at the end.

HTML Work

Start today with a Google A Day.

Then Draw a Stickman.  Wouldn't you like to learn how to do that?

You will create a one page website about your current class schedule. This website should include:

• A title in the header code.
• A clear heading on the page.
• A list of classes (yes, there is a code for list)
• A brief paragraph describing yourself (junior at Seymour High School, etc...)
• Background color other than white.  Keep the color light (no bright red, black, etc...if you disagree go back and look at the bad websites)

If you do the above correctly the maximum you can score is 3/4.  You must do at least one of the extras to be able to score 4/4.

Extras:

1. Can you include an image that you created?  Remember that the image must be in the same folder as the webpage.

2. Can you place the schedule in a table?

3. Can you create a link to Seymour High School?

Be sure you code the first 8 code tags correctly.  Be sure you open and close your tags in the correct order. 

Save the file to your WDrive-HTML folder when done.

HTML

Today we will have a coding test.  If you have spent time in code avengers this should be no problem.

Please do the following first:  Create a folder in your W Drive.  Name it "HTML Files".  All your work will be in this folder.

For each web page you will do the following:

• Open up a new page in the program Notepad
• Create the HTML code.
• Save the file using the .html extension

Using HTML tutorials or any other resource please complete the following tasks. 

1. Create a webpage titled "Web Apps". Add a heading and two paragraphs describing assignments you have already done (coding, blogging, etc.. ). Save as "webapps.html"

2. Create a biography webpage. Save as "biography.html". Include link to your blog. 

3. Show teacher when done.
